The San Francisco Bay Oil Spill – How you can help
Audubon California would like to thank all of those who have risen to the occasion to volunteer their time to support our efforts and those of other organizations working to help out in this time of crisis.
Below is information for anyone wishing to lend a hand:
- If you are on the Tiburon Peninsula and spot an oiled bird, please report it to us at (415) 388-2524. If you are anywhere else, call the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at (415) 701-2311. Do not attempt to pick up oiled birds unless you have been specifically trained to do so. In the interests of the bird, we ask that you only let those who have been trained handle them.
- The Richardson Bay Audubon Center needs volunteers to help observe the area, monitor and clean beaches, and help educate area residents on the spill. As we move forward, we will also need help with site restoration, habitat recovery, education and office administration. Anyone interested in helping with these types of activities should call the Center at (415) 388-2524.
- Contact a Bay Area Audubon chapter
- Those unable to help in person might want to consider making a donation. All of our work at Audubon California, Richardson Bay Audubon Center and Sanctuary, and Bay Area chapters is supported by members and donors, and your contribution will be greatly appreciated.
- Additional tips: During this time, we advise all residents of the Bay Area to stay off beaches and shorelines, and to keep their dogs off these sites as well. Bunker oil is particularly hazardous, and not something people should risk tracking to other locations.
- Baykeeper has a great list of volunteer and training opportunities.
